Behind the Poll
On one hand, some might argue that Biden’s low approval ratings should worry Democrats campaigning in midterm elections. After all, he is the head of their party and his popularity (or lack thereof) could rub off on down-ballot candidates. Furthermore, his unpopularity could energize Republican voters and help them turn out in droves to vote against Democrats.
On the other hand, others might say that Biden’s low approval ratings don’t necessarily spell doom for Democrats in the midterms. First of all, presidents’ popularity often has little bearing on how their party does in midterm elections. Secondly, even though Biden may be unpopular, Trump is even more so – and that could motivate Democrats to turn out and vote against the Republicans.
So, what should Democrats make of Biden’s low approval ratings? Ultimately, it is hard to say for sure how much they should worry. However, they would be wise to keep an eye on the situation and monitor how his popularity (or lack thereof) affects voter turnout in the months leading up to the midterms.
